Share on Twitter Share on Facebook 3 min readWhile the poker world is locked in on the bright lights of Las Vegas and the World Series of Poker, it’s easy to forget that the game never stops elsewhere. But over in Spain, the CNP Winamax Murcia Main Event quietly made some noise of its own, breaking attendance records and crowning a new champion in the early hours of June 30.
After more than eight hours of final table play, it was local favorite Carlos García who stood tall, claiming the silver clover trophy and nearly €50,000 for his victory. A heads-up deal saw that first-place prize trimmed slightly, but make no mistake, this was García’s night.
It wasn’t easy for the CNP Team Pro, who had to fight tooth and nail just to survive the marathon final table at Murcia’s Orenes Gran Casino. The short stacks wouldn’t stay short for long, with player after player finding double-ups to extend the action deep into the night.
García stayed patient, avoided unnecessary spots, and picked his moments perfectly. Along the way, he eliminated Ángel Blanco in third place, Luis Cortés, and eventually Sergio Mohedano heads-up to lock up the title.
Before the heads-up began, García and Mohedano agreed to split most of the remaining prize money, leaving €8,000 and the trophy to play for. But the heads-up didn’t last long. García entered with a huge chip lead and wasted little time finishing the job.
In the final hand, Mohedano moved all in with K♥7♦, only to see García snap him off with J♦7♦. A jack on the flop sealed Mohedano’s fate, and with it, García was crowned the Murcia champion in front of his home crowd.
The numbers in Murcia were impressive, to say the least. The €550 Main Event drew 674 entries, making it the biggest CNP Murcia event to date. Organizers are now eyeing Madrid, where even bigger numbers could be on the horizon.

The day started off looking like it might be a quick one. Of the 37 players who returned, eliminations came fast and furious, with under 20 players left by the time the lunch break rolled around.
All eyes were on Norway's Borge Dypvik, who came in hot after bulldozing the field on Day 2. He picked up premium hands early and eliminated three players within 20 minutes. At that point, Dypvik looked destined to steamroll the final table with a towering chip lead of 129 big blinds.
But tournament poker doesn’t always follow the script.
Dypvik ran cold at the worst time, losing big pots to both Ángel Blanco and Víctor Carrillo, including a brutal one where his aces were cracked by Blanco’s ace-king. Despite all his momentum, Dypvik had to settle for fifth place. Cortés and Blanco then bowed out to set the stage for heads-up
The heads-up between García and Mohedano didn’t last long, but the win meant everything to García, who hails from the region and proudly represents the CNP Team Pro.
It was fitting that one of the tour’s own lifted the trophy in Murcia, as the CNP Winamax tour continues to grow its footprint across Spain.
